Schumer forces reading of big, beautiful bill to delay voting
Senator Schumer (D-NY) decided to try to delay the vote on the spending bill for as long as he possibly could.
So, he forced the reading of the bill, every page, but it did not work, as the bill finally passed 51-49 after a marathon session.
Read it all
The Senate version of the bill is 940 pages long, and I would be willing to bet that at least half the people voting on the bill did not read every provision in the bill.
Schumer wanted to create some theatrics, so he forced the clerks to read every line of it before the vote would take place.
It took nearly 16 hours for the reading, which I actually support. What I don’t support is nobody being in the room during the reading. In my world, to ensure every person understood what was in the bill, every bill would read, line by line, and attendance would be mandatory if you wished to vote on the legislation. When the reading was over, the vote was taken.
Just a side note for those who have not seen this before, this is a tactic used by both sides when they are trying to prevent legislation from being passed.
Trump reacts
As noted above, after the reading took place, the bill was finally voted on, and it passed even though there were a handful of GOP defectors. Both Senators Tillis (R-NC) and Paul (R-KY) voted against the legislation.
Trump took a victory lap, posting, "They, along with all of the other Republican Patriots who voted for the Bill, are people who truly love our Country!
"As President of the USA, I am proud of them all, and look forward to working with them to GROW OUR ECONOMY, REDUCE WASTEFUL SPENDING, SECURE OUR BORDER, FIGHT FOR OUR MILITARY/VETS, ENSURE THAT OUR MEDICAID SYSTEM HELPS THOSE WHO TRULY NEED IT, PROTECT OUR SECOND AMENDMENT, AND SO MUCH MORE. GOD BLESS AMERICA &, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!"
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) also celebrated, posting, "Senate Republicans are one step closer to delivering on President Trump’s agenda by advancing the One Big Beautiful Bill, which will avoid a massive tax increase on Texas families, secure our southern border, remove burdensome taxes on Americans exercising their Second Amendment rights, and chart our country on a path toward fiscal sanity after years of frivolous spending in Washington under Joe Biden.”
Stay in town
Now the Senate is jumping through some procedural hoops before the bill is sent to the House, so Speaker Johnson (R-LA) has put the House on notice that the bill is headed to the floor, likely on July 2, and everyone needs to hang close rather than breaking for the holiday.
House leadership stated, “Members are advised that votes are now expected in the House as early as 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 2.
“Please stay tuned to future updates for additional information regarding this week’s schedule. This is a change from the previously announced schedule.”
This will not be an automatic vote in the House, as the Freedom Caucus has already voiced objections to the bill, so Johnson and Trump have a lot of work to do in 48 hours if they want the bill to pass, as is, from the Senate. If even a single change is made, it will have to go back to the Senate for another vote, and Trump has been adamant he wants this bill on his desk to sign on Independence Day.
