Senator Casey Refuses to Concede

Even since the end of the 2020 election, Democrats have been pushing the idea that Republicans are election deniers.

Now, one of their own is denying the outcome and refusing to concede.

Close Elections

There were quite a few close elections during this cycle, but the one everyone is watching is in PA.

The race in PA was won by Republican Dave McCormick, who won 48.9% of the vote.

Senator Casey (D-PA) won 48.5% of the vote.

With such a narrow margin, an automatic recount will be triggered. This is in place in PA for any election that comes in under 0.5% when all votes are counted.

Not Giving Up

Most outlets have called the PA race at this point, and we are talking about more than 25,000 votes, so while the race is close, it is not really that close.

In all my years of covering politics, I have never seen more than a few hundred votes change in a recount, but Casey is refusing to concede, claiming that McCormick is trying to disenfranchise voters. To be very clear, news organizations do not call these races lightly, as they look at the remaining districts and if there is enough possible support to change the current outcome. In this case, there was no way they would call the race if they thought Casey would make up 30,000 votes.

Maddy McDaniel, a Casey spokesperson, stated, “The number of provisional ballots expected from areas that favor Senator Casey, like Philadelphia and its suburbs, is further proof that this race is too close to be called.

“As the McCormick campaign admitted in their own lawsuit this morning, the counting of these ballots could have an ‘impact on the outcome of the election.'”

State of the Party

Even if this seat were to flip, and I think that is highly unlikely, the GOP would continue to have the majority on the Senate.

The current state of the Senate is 53-47, so the majority would then be 52-48. All this would really do is make it a bit more difficult to get Trump’s nominations passed, as there are bound to be a few that are going to have trouble.

At the top of that list right now is Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who has been nominated as Trump’s Attorney General.

Gaetz does not really appear to be qualified, nor is he well-liked. To that point, I have seen comments from at least six Republican Senators that make it appear imminent that Gaetz’s nomination will be blocked.
