Senator Paul says at least four Republicans will block spending bill
The GOP has been trying to work out the details of the spending bill for weeks, and it finally passed the House last week.
That victory may be short-lived, however, as numerous Republican Senators are pushing back.
You have been warned
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has been adamant about the debt ceiling in this bill as a non-starter for him.
He has even stated that, although he does not like the bill overall, he would still vote for it if it did not include the huge debt-ceiling increase.
Now Trump is putting him on notice, stating, "If Senator Rand Paul votes against our Great, Big, Beautiful Bill, he is voting for, along with the Radical Left Democrats, a 68% Tax Increase and, perhaps even more importantly, a first time ever default on U.S. Debt.
"Rand will be playing right into the hands of the Democrats, and the GREAT people of Kentucky will never forgive him! The GROWTH we are experiencing, plus some cost-cutting later on, will solve ALL problems. America will be greater than ever before!"
Johnson chimes in
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) has also been quite vocal about wanting to take a red pen to this legislation, and he has also stated that he will not cave to Trump’s threats.
Johnson reaffirmed his position this weekend, stating, "Rick Scott has the experience in Florida. Take a look at how successful he was at reducing spending, balancing his budget, and then giving tax cuts to Floridians. He'd be great on a budget review panel, I propose that."
He later added, "It's been [an] unprecedented level of spending. There's no justification for $4.4 to $7 trillion in just six years. Getting back to a reasonable pre-pandemic level, you do it line by line by line.”
Bottom line, if they don’t make these cuts, that is two of the four votes needed to block the legislation.
We have the votes
The GOP has only three votes to spare, and now, according to Senator Paul, his group has enough votes to block this legislation if Democrats do not support it.
He stated, “I think there are four of us at this point, and I would be very surprised if the bill, at least, is not modified in a good direction. Look, I want to vote for it. I’m for the tax cuts. I voted for the tax cuts before. I want the tax cuts to be permanent, but at the same time, I don’t want to raise the debt ceiling $5 trillion."
“So, I’ve told him, if you take the debt ceiling off the bill, in all likelihood, I can vote for what the agreement is on the rest of the bill, and it doesn’t have to be perfect to my liking. But I can’t be- if I vote for the $5 trillion debt, who’s left in Washington that cares about the debt. We will have lost it. The GOP will own the debt once they vote for this.”
Time is running out to get this legislation passed, and the GOP needs to stop playing games. If they don’t get this bill passed, the likelihood of holding the House and Senate in the upcoming mid-term elections begins to go into a downward spiral. And by no means am I saying these senators should fold, but I do believe Trump and Speaker Johnson need to stop being so cocky and give the American people the cuts and savings they promised during the 2024 cycle.
