Some Senators appear to be losing faith in Marco Rubio
Marco Rubio was one of the first nominees revealed by Donald Trump, and he had unanimous support during his confirmation.
However, reports are surfacing that there is some concern about Rubio on both sides of the aisle.
Unanimously confirmed
I have always liked Rubio, at least for the most part. He took Trump's “Little Marco” ribbing in good spirit, showing he could take a punch and fight back.
When Trump selected him as his Secretary of State, I was delighted and had predicted he would easily pass through confirmation. Still, even I was not expecting it to be unanimous.
Rubio was delighted to be selected for the post, having stated, "Leading the U.S. Department of State is a tremendous responsibility, and I am honored by the trust President Trump has placed in me.
"As Secretary of State, I will work every day to carry out his foreign policy agenda. Under the leadership of President Trump, we will deliver peace through strength and always put the interests of Americans and America above all else. I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the U.S. Senate so the President has his national security and foreign policy team in place when he takes office on January 20."
Musk and Rubio Clash
Last week, reports surfaced that Musk and Rubio got into an argument behind closed doors.
The White House has denied the report, but I don’t believe the denial for a second. As I stated in another report today, if Musk came into my department the way he did to State and others, I would have gotten in his face about it or possibly offered my resignation.
The report claimed that Musk went after Rubio for not firing anyone, at which point Rubio allegedly shot back that 1,000 workers had taken the buyout, so his department had already been significantly downsized.
The report then stated that Musk accused Rubio of only being good on TV, insinuating that Rubio was not doing his job. Trump reportedly pushed back, jumping in that he was quite happy with Rubio, and the dustup was ended.
Maga Loves Musk
Now, Elon Musk is treated like a god among the truly hard-core MAGA members, but Rubio… well, not so much. If this continues, we all know where MAGA will fall, and it surely will not be behind Rubio. Rubio, however, gave up his career as a Senator to join this administration, so he is not going to go out without a fight. Now, he is battling doubt among Senators on both sides of the aisle as well as the rumors about his fight with Musk.
To that point, Senator Mike Rounds (R-SD) stated, “Long term, he will have a real influence. Short term, I think he’s probably still getting his feet on the ground.”
Democrats are not being so kind in their criticism, with Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) stating, “Sen. Rubio, his words, his actions, his legislation, he was one way, and somehow when he walked through that door and took that oath to become secretary, they are not one and the same.” She went on to say that she “maybe” regretted backing Rubio. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) added, “His position now is secretary of sycophants, not secretary of State.” Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) also regret backing Rubio.
Again, I am still behind Rubio and I like what he has done so far. I am concerned about how Musk will react if there is a conflict. Musk is a savage, and if he sees weakness and wants Rubio out, he will be vicious in trying to take him out. I am hoping this was just a disagreement and not a true clash. That will all play out in the next couple of weeks, so we will keep our eye on this and, hopefully, things will smooth out between these two.
