Spanberger's 'moderate' mask slips as Democrats hand her the SOTU response

Democrats have selected Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger to deliver the party's response to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address next Tuesday. It's a fascinating choice, and one that tells you everything about how the left defines "moderate" in 2026.

The New York Times calls Spanberger a "centrist" and a "moderate." Her record in Richmond tells a different story entirely.

Day one: ten executive orders and counting

On her first day in office, Spanberger signed a batch of 10 executive orders, many of them aimed squarely at dismantling the policy framework left behind by former Governor Glenn Youngkin. The speed was the tell. This wasn't governance. It was erasure.

Among the first casualties was Youngkin's EO 47, which deputized state law enforcement to assist the Trump administration with federal immigration enforcement. Youngkin had made the rationale plain when he announced the mandate last year:

"Dangerous illegal immigrants should not be let back into our communities to assault, rape and murder. They should be sent back to where they came from."

Spanberger got rid of that. In its place, she offered the vague assurance that "the Commonwealth should prioritize the safety and security of all residents in Virginia." Safety and security, apparently, by ensuring state police cannot help federal authorities remove criminal illegal immigrants from Virginia communities, as Breitbart reports.

Just this month, she issued another executive order directing that Virginia law enforcement "does not engage in fear-based policing" or "enforcement theater" related to "administrative enforcement of civil status." Translated from bureaucratic euphemism: don't help the feds enforce immigration law, and don't let anyone call it what it is.

DEI by executive fiat

Spanberger's Executive Order 4, focused on public education, calls for "preventing discrimination for all students, including historically marginalized students" and directs state agencies to "address contributing factors to disparities in outcomes," including "discriminatory policies, resource inequities and opportunity gaps, and other factors." If that language sounds familiar, it should. It's the same framework that has been used nationwide to justify racial preferences, lowered standards, and ideological programming in public schools.

Her EO 9, an "equal opportunity" directive, mandates "affirmative measures … to emphasize the recruitment of qualified minorities, women, disabled persons, and older Virginians to serve at all levels of state government." It also "specifically prohibits discrimination" on the basis of "gender identity or expression." So the same governor who claims the moderate lane is embedding gender ideology into state hiring policy and injecting affirmative action mandates across Virginia's government.

None of this is centrist. None of it is moderate. It is a progressive wish list executed through unilateral action.

Abortion, taxes, and the full menu

In another February move, Spanberger signed the pro-abortion "Right to Reproductive Freedom Act" to the November ballot. She has endorsed multiple tax hikes, including rejoining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) and creating a statewide paid family and medical leave program that increases childcare subsidies.

During her first joint address to the state assembly, Spanberger made her priorities explicit:

"And yes, Virginia — at long last, raise our minimum wage to $15 dollars an hour."

Higher taxes. Higher mandated wages. A climate regulatory scheme. Expanded government programs. This is the record of someone the national media insists is a moderate.

The SOTU response and the branding problem

Former Breitbart News senior editor-at-large Joel Pollak put it well:

"Did Trump get to pick which Democrat gives the response to the State of the Union? Abigail Spanberger is Trump's Exhibit A in showing What Happens When You Elect a 'Moderate' Democrat."

Pollak also wrote that "she's raising every possible tax, and gerrymandering her state 10-to-1." Radio personality Bo Snerdley mused along similar lines, wondering if "she'll talk about the 50 new taxes she and her fellow Democrats want to soak Virginia taxpayers with."

The selection reveals a deeper problem for the Democratic Party. They don't have actual moderates to showcase, so they rebrand progressives and hope nobody checks the record. Spanberger won her governor's race as a former congresswoman who could plausibly claim the center. Once in office, the mask came off in a matter of hours.

What 'moderate' really means

This is the pattern. Run as pragmatic. Govern as progressive. Count on a friendly press corps to maintain the fiction. The New York Times supplies the "centrist" label; the governor supplies the executive orders gutting immigration enforcement, mandating DEI hiring quotas, and putting abortion expansions on the ballot.

Virginia voters who thought they were getting a reasonable alternative to partisan governance got ten executive orders on day one, a sanctuary posture toward illegal immigrants, gender ideology woven into state employment policy, and a tax agenda that would make Sacramento blush.

Next Tuesday, Spanberger will stand before the nation and present herself as the reasonable face of the Democratic Party. The record is already written. The only question is whether anyone outside conservative media will bother to read it.
