Speaker Johnson getting behind call to impeach anti-Trump judges

As we all know, several judges seem to have a personal grudge against Trump, which has led to numerous Republicans calling for their impeachment.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) has been among the loudest, even conducting a hearing on the matter.

Now, while once against judicial impeachments, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has seen the light and is joining the cause.

The Hearing

Sen. Cruz has gone from Trump’s biggest critique to his most loyal servant in the Senate, if not in all of Congress.

Judges James Boasberg and Deborah Boardman have become the target of his wrath, both the subject of a recent hearing on judicial overreach.

In part, during his opening remarks, Cruz stated, “The American Republic begins with a simple and radical truth: all power originates with the people. Before there is a Congress, before there is a President, before there are courts, there is the sovereign citizen."

He continued, “The Founders placed that principle on the very first line of our national charter: ‘We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, do ordain and establish this Constitution.’ They did not say we the judges, we the bureaucrats, or we the elites. They said ‘We the People.’”

Going for Impeachment

You have sometimes seen me use the term “rogue judge” on these pages, and that is not a term that I use lightly.

My regular readers know that when I feel a ruling is correct, I say as much, even if it goes against Trump or any other Republican.

In the case of Judge James Boasberg, I believe he is the poster child of a rogue judge, as do many Republicans, and their rhetoric proves it. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) said that Boasberg is “the embodiment of a rogue judge.”

Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, however, has pushed back on the idea, stating, “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”

Changing His Tune

Last year, Johnson was clearly opposed to such an extreme measure, but that is no longer the case.

He stated, "I think some of these judges have gotten so far outside the bounds of where they're supposed to operate. It would not be, in my view, a bad thing for Congress to lay down the law.”

When Johnson was specifically asked about Sen. Cruz’s efforts, he responded, "I'm for it. Boasberg is one who's been mentioned, and these are some egregious abuses."

This is all an exercise in futility, however, as the GOP will never get the votes to impeach these judges, not even close. There will not be a single Democrat to support the measure. Sadly, this will only get Cruz some headlines and garner him more favor from Trump, but nothing else will ever come of it.
