Squad gets some allies in the GOP caucus
The story that is top of mind in this country right now is whether the United States will help Israel defeat Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
This has created some strange bedfellows with the Squad and some prominent members of the GOP.
Not Our Job
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has never had a problem swimming upstream, and he is doing it again in regard to the Israel-Iran war.
There is a very legitimate question on the table of the United States entering this war to end Iran’s nuclear capabilities if they do not come to a diplomatic agreement.
Paul is already pushing back, which is bad news for Trump if Congress is needed to approve the strike.
When asked about our involvement in this war, Paul responded, “It's not the U.S.'s job to be involved.” If Paul is out, that leaves very little wiggle room.
Cruz Disagrees
Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) would love to see Iran decimated, so he is clearly behind an attack if needed, but he also made note that we are not talking about putting boots on the ground here.
He stated, "Nobody is talking about invading Iran. We're not going to see boots on the ground."
Cruz later added, "The overwhelming majority of Americans, nearly 80%, support President Trump, and support President Trump defending us against an Iranian nuclear weapon."
I am not sure where he got that number from, and I question if it is accurate, but I would hope he is right about the majority of Americans not wanting to see a nuclear Iran.
Strange Bedfellows
We know the Democrat SQUAD members in the House want nothing to do with this war, and they just found at least one ally in Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).
He stated, "This is not our war. But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution.”
He sounded just like Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), who stated, "The American people do not want to be dragged into another disastrous conflict in the Middle East. I’m proud to lead this bipartisan War Powers Resolution with Rep. Massie to reassert that any military action against Iran must be authorized by Congress.”
It is situations like this that I was against Trump bullying members of Congress to get them behind the spending legislation. Now, Trump has created a legitimate enemy in Massie, and while his time in Congress may be limited, Trump needs his support right now, and he could create a lot of problems for Trump if he decides to move forward without the approval of Congress.
