Trump beef imports from Argentina becoming an unexpected problem
The price of beef in this country has been on the rise for some time, and Trump’s solution to lower the price is to import beef from Argentina.
Generally speaking, Trump says it, MAGA falls in line, but that is not happening this time around.
MAGA is pushing back, members of Congress are pushing back, and a major group of Trump supporters, red-state cattle farmers, are definitely pushing back.
The Beef Issue
Argentina is struggling, to put it mildly, and Trump decided that he would throw its president a lifeline while doing something to address the high prices of beef in this country.
One of the factors contributing to high prices in the United States is the cost of fuel, as that impacts the price of everything that has to be transported.
Trump says everything he does puts “America First,” but importing beef to the country is going to significantly impact US cattle farmers, and they are not happy about.
Cattle producers and members of Congress have started to push back on the issue, and that is not good news for Trump, especially in terms of the cattle producers who largely reside in very pro-Trump states and some purple states.
Producers Push Back
Meriwether Farms, a major cattle producer, for instance, stated, “We understand beef prices are high, and we admire your concern for all Americans, but this is not the fault of the American producer. This is the fault of politicians who have allowed BRICS-aligned entities to dominate the meat industry, that participate in price fixing and who also continually lie to their consumers.”
The statement continued, “On top of all this—there is only chaos coming from the Department of Agriculture. There is no true guidance, mixed messaging, and a copious amount of photo ops. There is no one to trust over there that truly understands the issues and isn’t bought out by or aligned with Big Industries.”
Indiana cattle rancher Todd Armstrong added, “[W]hat frustrates me about this whole move is President Trump ran on an ‘America First’ program. I don’t see anything in this that puts America first. It’s hypocritical.”
I called Trump out for this policy as soon as he announced it, for several reasons. The first and most obvious being that I live in Texas, and cattle farming is a big part of the state’s economy. There is no way I am going to support a program that will hurt Texas farmers. Second, there is the question of quality, which has also been a concern of the ranchers and members of Congress who are pushing back on this.
MTG Pushes Back Again
If Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) had been added to Trump’s cabinet, I have no doubt she would have kept quiet on Epstein, would have supported the BBB in full, and likely would have supported this program. However, she was snubbed, and she has been one of the most vocal people against Trump ever since.
Greene is now walking a fine line, calling out the administration while trying to promote Trump, and that just doesn’t fly for my money. She stated, “I have no idea who is telling our great president, our ‘America First’ president, that this is a good idea. Because, honestly, it’s a punch in the gut to all of our American cattle ranchers, and they are furious and rightfully so.”
Trump always says he makes the final call, so you don’t get to blame something like this on an adviser. This is Trump, period, so if you are going to call out the decision, don’t temper it by sucking up to Trump before you drop the bombshell. This, to me, is the biggest problem in that when Trump does something good, everyone slaps him on the back, but when something happens they don’t like, they look to push it off an adviser. Trump most assuredly has advisers getting in his ear, but he is the one making the final call.
I believe in accountability, period, not excuses. When Trump does something good, I give him his props and applaud him. When he does something I think is wrong for the country or Americans, I have no problem calling him out, regardless of the heat I will take for it. My job is to be honest with you guys, and in this case, I think this is a horrible decision by Trump.
