Trump DOJ requests to drop charges against NYC Mayor
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is one of the few Democrats in this country who runs a major sanctuary city and has expressed any intent to work with Trump on his immigration agenda.
He also happens to have some significant corruption charges hanging over his head, which the Department of Justice has now decided to drop.
Drop the charges
Adams and several members of his administration are facing very serious corruption charges. In this country, you are innocent until proven guilty, but we will never know if Adams is guilty if a recent court filing is successful.
The DOJ filed a motion over the weekend to have the charges against Adams dropped, arguing, "The Acting Deputy Attorney General has determined, pursuant to an authorization by the Attorney General, that dismissal is necessary and appropriate and has directed the same, based on the unique facts and circumstances of this case.
"The Acting Deputy Attorney General concluded that dismissal is necessary because of appearances of impropriety and risks of interference with the 2025 elections in New York City."
Many believe this a quid pro quo between Trump and Adams. The belief is that Adams will cooperate with Trump on immigration to have these charges dropped. My stance is that this is a complete and utter mistake by Trump and the DOJ, giving the wrong optics that as long as you are willing to work with Trump and help his agenda, you have a green light to do just about anything, including major political corruption.
Resign!
The New York City Council has been very outspoken over this, having already demanded that Adams resign his position due to the fact these charges were hanging over his head.
To that point, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams stated, “He now must prioritize New York City and New Yorkers, step aside and resign. This administration no longer has the ability to effectively govern with Eric Adams as mayor.”
Another top council member, Justin Brannan (D-Brooklyn), added, “New Yorkers deserve a mayor who always puts the city first. City Hall is in turmoil, trust in government has eroded, and New Yorkers are left wondering who is actually running this city. There is too much at stake and we’ve got too much work to do.”
Among the allegations faced by Adams was that he was taking foreign money to build up his war chest, which then enabled him to take advantage of a donor program to add even taxpayer money to his campaign funds. The official charges are conspiracy to commit wire fraud, federal program bribery, and to receive campaign contributions by foreign nationals, wire fraud, two counts of solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national, and bribery.
Enough is enough
As noted above, the entire administration is in chaos over this, with at least four key staffers saying they would resign when the DOJ announced its intent to drop the charges against Adams.
First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres Springer, Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams Isom, and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Chauncey Parker stated they intend to resign.
I know how important Trump's immigration agenda is, and I know if Adams goes, anyone replacing him will be much more difficult to work with, but that is not enough for me to just look the other way on possible political corruption. If you ask me if I think Adams is guilty, I would say yes, which is why I am infuriated that Trump wants these charges dropped simply because Adams is willing to play ball.
Are we not better than this as conservatives? Are we now willing to throw our integrity and morals out the window to get a win? The message here is that if you are a politician, corruption is okay as long as you succumb to the desires of this administration. I cannot support that, even though I fully support everything that Trump is doing right now regarding immigration.
I say let Adams face his day in court and let the cards fall where they may. Attorney General Pam Bondi has already started to take sanctuary cities to court, a fight that will eventually wind up before the Supreme Court, so, in the end, Adams is a meaningless cog in this machine. However, now he is possibly getting away with blatant corruption simply because he is willing to play ball with Trump. Sorry, but I cannot support that.
