Trump hits Schumer after spending bill blocked
It is not surprising to see Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) become an obstructionist now that Trump is in office, doing the very same things he whined about happening when Senator McConnell (R-KY) was blocking Biden.
Trump is not Biden, however, and he is firing off attacks against Schumer, and they are not being perceived well by Dems or the media.
Schumer Says Dems Will Block Funding
When Joe Biden was in office, all we heard was Democrats complaining about Republicans blocking funding legislation. The GOP often explained this as being done because they were not being consulted during the crafting of the legislation.
Then, of course, with Trump in office, the same thing is happening, only now it is Schumer blocking the legislation.
Trying to justify his order to vote down the current spending bill, Schumer stated, “Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their [continuing resolution] without any input — any input — from congressional Democrats.
“Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR. Our caucus is unified on a clean [CR through April 11] that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that can pass.”
Trump Calls Schumer a Palestinian
As we all know, Trump loves to shake the media by making sensationalistic criticism, especially when it comes to Democrats, and he just hit Schumer pretty good.
Trump stated, "Schumer is a Palestinian as far as I'm concerned. You know, he's become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He's not Jewish anymore. He's a Palestinian.”
Schumer, like many Democrats, has hammered Israel for the war against Hamas. However, the fact that he is Jewish, well, Trump’s comments did not sit well with a lot of people.
However, that did not stop Trump from continuing his attack, later adding, "These people are sick. They don't know what's happening in the real world. The Democrats have to get their act together, and if they don't vote, then what? You're going to have taxes that are going to go through the roof. You're going to have a very bad time. You're going to have some very bad things happen and people are going to blame the Democrats."
Pushback Against Trump Statement
Both Jewish and Muslim groups were fairly upset with Trump’s comments about Schumer.
Leading the charge was Nihad Awad, national executive director of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), who stated, “President Trump’s use of the term ‘Palestinian’ as a racial slur is offensive and beneath the dignity of his office.”
Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, added, “Donald Trump doesn’t get to decide who is Jewish. ‘Palestinian’ should not be used as an insult. These comments are abhorrent but revealing of why the vast majority of Jewish voters have not and will never support Donald Trump.”
I knew this was going to be a problem for Trump as soon as I heard it, and I was right. I really don’t care about the comments from CAIR, but Trump has done very well among Jewish Americans, so the pushback from that group is significant. Hopefully, this will fade out of the news cycle quickly and will not reappear during the 2026 and 2028 elections.
