Trump now talking directly to Iran about nuclear program

Iran’s nuclear program has been a major focus for Trump since Barack Obama was in office.

Trump ripped up Obama’s deal, then Biden tried to put it back in place, but now Trump says he has started direct talks with the terrorist nation on the subject.

The Obama deal

On January 16, 2016, Barack Obama announced a deal he had made with Iran regarding its nuclear program.

The administration outlined a specific series of steps it required from Iran, adding, “Because Iran has completed these steps, the U.S. and international community can begin the next phase under the JCPOA, which means the U.S. will begin lifting its nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.

“However, a number of U.S. sanctions authorities and designations will continue to remain in place.”

Trump was critical of the plan from the outset, and was adamant that he would end it if he won the election.

It’s Over

Trump contended that Iran was never holding up its part of the deal, and he was foaming at the mouth to end the deal if elected.

Trump took no time at all to toss the deal into the shredder after winning office.

When Trump was finally able to pull out of the deal, he stated, “This was a horrible one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made. It didn’t bring calm, it didn’t bring peace, and it never will.”

As we noted above, once Biden won office, he did his best to get something similar to the Biden deal in place, but Iran rejected every attempt made by the administration to get something in place, and Biden was never able to ink a deal.

Trump opens talks

With the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war, there have been growing concerns about Iran having a usable nuclear weapon.

Trump has now made it clear that he will leave the door open to discuss the matter with Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded to the reports, “We don’t avoid talks; it’s the breach of promises that has caused issues for us so far. They must prove that they can build trust.”

I found that response rather amusing when you consider the terrorist organizations Iran backs that have led attacks against our troops and allied bases in the Middle East.

Having said that, Trump’s hand is being forced as he cannot afford the US to get involved with boots on the ground once these other conflicts are resolved. Trump has always been proud of the fact he is the only president in modern history to avoid getting the United States involved in a new conflict, and a deal with Iran, if he can work one out, would prevent that from happening. If no deal, however, Trump will have to do what he has to do in order to ensure Iran does not have a nuclear weapon it could use against the United States or its allies.
