Trump polling remains high after #SignalGate
Last week was not a good week for Trump for several reasons, but it does appear, at least for now, he got away unscathed.
The latest polls are out, and Trump’s approval rating continues to be among the highest it has ever been.
The Atlantic
When the Atlantic’s Jeff Goldberg released his report, I thought it would crush Trump, and for good reason.
This was a massive breach, but it was only made worse by the spin being put on it by the Trump administration.
When Goldberg was asked about the story, he stated, “All I did was answer a message request from Mike Waltz on Signal and the rest of it just came to my phone.”
He later added, “No, I mean, I wish I had not been put in the position to have to release the more sensitive texts, but the only reason I did that was because they said we were lying about what we had, and they were trying to cover up what was obviously a massive national security breach."
“Journalists, I hope, operate in the public interest. The public needs to know that they don’t take national security seriously, so that’s why I put out what I did.”
Trump Haters
While the Democrats and media were hammering Trump over this, his allies were downplaying it as much as they could, accusing the Atlantic of a hoax, all on the basis that the publication initially referred to the leak as “war plans” instead of “attack plans.”
Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow has been all-in on Trump from day one, and makes excuse after excuse for Trump on all fronts, so I really don’t take him seriously any longer.
But to my point, when he was on Fox News regarding the leak, he flipped this around on Goldberg, “The main thing is the mission was successful the conversation was not some sort of clandestine confidential information it was all information that was that was fine and the conversation was very smart. I hope you actually read the conversation if they were gonna read these leaked chats.
“Jeffrey Goldberg’s a fabulist he acted like he had war secrets he didn’t anything of the sort. He was just trying to get attention for himself and his publication which is funded by Trump hater and Lorraine Powell Jobs, The Atlantic, that has been undermining Trump from the very beginning.”
It didn’t work
It looks like the defense arguments by Trump and his surrogates were successful because the latest CBS News polling still has Trump at a 50% approval rating, which is just shocking to me.
Again, to be clear, this could have been a nothing burger had Trump handled it differently, but what upset me about it all was the ridiculous spin they put on it and how some conservative outlets decided to help the White House push the narrative.
I still think someone has to be held accountable, even if that means firing Waltz if we find that if it was him who invited Goldberg into that group. If it were a Waltz aide, then that person should be fired.
Trump does not get a free pass in my book just because he is Trump and a Republican. It sickens me that so many people give him a free pass when he messes up, and I have vowed never to do that, to always hold everyone accountable. If that makes me a villain, so be it, but this was a huge mistake and we are extremely lucky we don’t have dead troops today had Goldberg printed that story early. The fact that the mission was a success despite the leak is irrelevant. Trump spent four years saying Biden should have fired people and held his team accountable for the mistakes made, yet they are not willing to do the same now.
