Trump pulls nominee, names Fox News host as replacement
At least one key Republican was resisting Donald Trump’s nominee for the US Attorney for DC, so Trump had no choice but to pull the nomination.
Then Trump dropped a bombshell by replacing the nominee on an acting basis with yet another Fox News personality.
Won’t Support Him
Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) holds Ed Martin in high regard, and he would have supported him as a US Attorney in any other position, but his actions and defense of J6 defendants would not allow him to support Martin to be the US Attorney in DC.
That being the case, Tillis, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, would not support Martin, making it unlikely that he would get out of committee, so the nomination was at risk.
Tillis explained, “Where we probably have a difference is, I think anybody that reached the perimeter should have been in prison for some period of time, whether it’s for 30 days or three years, which is debatable.
"But I have no tolerance for anyone who entered the building.”
Pulling the Nomination
Trump was clearly disappointed in the lack of support for Martin, but quite frankly, I don’t think Martin would have earned the full slate of GOP votes had he gotten out of committee for the reason Tillis objected to him.
Trump stated, "He wasn't getting the support from people that I thought. You know, he's done a very good job. Crime is down 25% in DC during this period of time… I can only lift that little phone so many times of the day. But we have somebody else.
"I have to be straight. I was disappointed. A lot of people were disappointed. But that's the way it works. Sometimes, you know, that's the way it works. And he wasn't rejected, but we felt it would be very – it would be hard. And we have somebody else that will be announcing over the next two days who's going to be great."
Trump stated that he would put another nominee forward, as well as hinting that he may find a home for Martin later in the administration, stating, “He’s going to have a wonderful future, maybe with us.”
Fox News Feeding Farm
Donald Trump has nearly two dozen Fox News members on his staff, including some rather significant cabinet positions, and he just added one more.
After announcing that he was pulling Martin’s name, Trump announced that Fox News’ “The Five” co-host Jeanine Pirro would be serving as the interim US Attorney for DC.
He stated, "I am pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York. She is in a class by herself. Congratulations Jeanine!"
Unlike some of the other people from Fox News that Trump has tapped for positions, Pirro has the resume for this post. She served as a judge for the Westchester County Court for two years before being elected as the District Attorney for the same county, a position she held from 1994 to 2005.
