Trump reveals letter from King Charles for second state visit to UK

This week, Donald Trump hosted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House.

Starmer was there to meet with Trump about brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia, but he also had a bit of a surprise for Donald Trump.

Unprecedented Letter

Starmer revealed that he had a letter from King Charles for Donald Trump, stating, "This is really special. This has never happened before. This is unprecedented.”

He continued, "I think that just symbolizes the strength of the relationship between us. This is a very special letter. I think the last state visit was a tremendous success. His majesty the king wants to make this even better than that."

When Starmer asked Trump directly for an answer to the invitation, Trump responded, "The answer is yes, on behalf our wonderful First Lady Melania and myself, the answer is yes and we look forward to being there and honoring the king and honoring really your country. Your country is a fantastic country."

Trump has always had a good relationship with the Royal family, so much so, I think it got under the skin of the media when he was seen with Queen Elizabeth laughing it up during his last visit.

The First Visit

During Trump’s first visit, the mainstream media went after him right from the very first day.

For instance, the New York Times reported, "The juxtaposition of high pageantry and low name-calling, on the first day of Mr Trump's state visit to Britain, captured yet again the odd swath that this president cuts on the world stage: impulsive and erratic, delighted by a lavish welcome but preoccupied by petty feuds or events back home.”

The Washington Post was a bit nicer, reporting, "He gives candid commentary before he travels abroad on a nation's political scene and stokes controversy that leaves officials bracing for chaos. But after he lands, he rarely uses the international stage to advance a discernible agenda or to wield his influence to shape world events."

That scrutiny continued throughout the trip, with Politico even claiming that Trump as thrown of his game the moment he did not see his Fox News safety net.

Meeting the Queen and the Mayor

During Trump’s first visit, he clearly became fond of then-Prince Charles, but everyone was shocked to see the interaction between Donald Trump and Queen Elizabeth. The two of them were seen having a conversation and a good chuckle, which infuriated the media.

When it came to the mayor of London, however, it was a completely different story. Trump unloaded on Mayor Sadiq Khan, posting, “@SadiqKhan, who by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly ‘nasty”’to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom. He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me...”

“...Kahn reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of NYC, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job - only half his height. In any event, I look forward to being a great friend to the United Kingdom, and am looking very much forward to my visit. Landing now!”

Trump will have to deal with Kahn again during this trip, as he was just elected to serve his third term in May 2024. He was the first mayor to be elected to a third term, having defeated conservative candidate Susan Hall. So, while Trump does not like him, Kahn does appear to be popular with the people of London.
