Trump Says He Will Work with Democrats on Dreamers Remaining in Country
Donald Trump just made an announcement that was not covered on his election agenda.
Trump announced that he would work with Democrats to help "Dreamers" stay in this country, and I am not sure how his supporters are going to react.
Not the First Time
If we go back to Trump's first time in office, he put a plan on the table with Democrats that would have given amnesty to nearly two million immigrants.
At the time, that was the estimated number of Dreamers in the country, and Trump was hoping that an offer of amnesty would be taken to shut the DACA program down, but Democrats balked at the idea.
When Trump first announced his plan, I did not like it, but I supported it to have DACA ended.
Trump's plan at the time did not include chain migration, so the concerns of having nearly two million turn into six million were abated.
New Plan
On Sunday, Trump dropped a bit of a bombshell on his supporters by announcing he would work with Democrats to help Dreamers.
Trump stated, "I will work with the Democrats on a plan, and if we can come up with a plan, but the Democrats have made it very very difficult to do anything. Republicans are very open to the Dreamers."
Trump then took a shot at Biden for not getting this done when they controlled the White House, stating, "It should have been able to work out over the last three or four years, and it never got worked out. Biden could have done it because he controlled Congress to a certain extent, right?
"He could have done something, but they didn't do it. I never understood why. They always seemed to want to do it. I think we can work with the Democrats and work something out."
What Does This Mean?
Ask me if I support this now and I will say "no," but I can also tell you why this may be the fastest way to come to a conclusion on this.
If we say that 10 million illegals have come here with Joe Biden in office (and that is a very conservative number), you are looking at a deportation operation that will take years to carry out.
The largest operation ever was less than 500,000 in a single year, so asking for 10 million to be deported in four years is asking for a miracle. What is more likely is that we have a steady flow of criminal migrants leaving while working with Democrats to shut down the border permanently.
While I still think working with Democrats is futile, the only way Trump will get any concessions from them on the border is to offer them amnesty for the Dreamers. My guess is they won't take it, so this could actually work in Trump's favor when she shows that he tried to get something done.
