Trump says wife Melania 'can't talk about' shooting

Former President Donald Trump described to Fox News host Laura Ingraham how his wife Melania reacted to the assassination attempt against him at a Pennsylvania rally on July 13, saying that she still can't talk about it.

Trump said that Melania watched the shooting live on television and thought that "the worst had happened."

"When I went down, she thought the worst had happened because I went down, and I grabbed my [ear] and I saw my hand was loaded up with blood. You see it in slow motion, instant replay," he said.

"She can't really even talk about it. Which is okay, because that means she likes me or she loves me," he said.

"Brave"

He went on: "She could talk about it freely, I'm not so sure which is better. She either likes or loves me, that's nice."

Trump both praised and criticized the Secret Service agents who protected him and shot down the person who tried to kill him, calling them "brave" but also pointing out the failures.

"I just want to say one thing about Secret Service... they were very brave," he said. "They were coming. Bullets were flying over me. I went down and they were -- they were on top of me, I had a lot of very big, strong people on top of me."

"Should've been somebody on the roof, should've been communication with the local police," he said, adding that taking down the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks "should've happened nine seconds earlier."

"Very important"

Trump told Ingraham that it was "very important" to get to the bottom of what happened because a rallygoer, Corey Comperatore was killed by the shooting and two others were injured.

Congressional testimony on Tuesday showed that law enforcement first noticed the shooter, Thomas Crooks, more than 90 minutes before the shooting took place.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle stepped down last week after making a number of excuses for the security failures.

Trump will speak to the FBI to make a victim statement on Thursday.

This is after the FBI questioned whether a bullet actually struck him.

Director Christopher Wray admitted during the testimony that Trump was struck by a bullet.
