Trump Touts Wayne Gretzky to Replace Trudeau as Canadian PM
It is no secret that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is having problems with support even among party leadership right now.
So, Trump just floated the idea of replacing him with NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.
Time for the Legend
After Trump won the election, Trudeau flew to Mar-a-Lago for a heart-to-heart with Trump, but there is still a lot of bad blood between these two.
When Joe Biden won the 2020 election, Trudeau celebrated a return to normalcy, which I am sure did not sit well with Trump.
To that point, over the holiday, Trump trolled Trudeau, posting, "I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘The Great One as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada - You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.’"
Trump further stated that Gretzky had no interest in entering political life, but Trump may also want to brush up on how a PM is installed in Canada because it is not by election (the winning party in Parliament generally appoints the party leader as the PM).
Problems for Trudeau
Canadians have been going off on Trudeau for various reasons, and videos are popping up all over the place regarding constituents confronting him at town hall-style events and even in public.
In a recent IPSOS poll, 73% of Canadians believe he should resign from office, including 43% of liberal voters. His numbers are about as bad as Joe Biden’s.
There are several key factors why Canadians are so unhappy, and at the top of that list is inflation, which peaked at 8% after the pandemic and is still sitting around 6.4%, so people in the country are getting crushed worse than we are.
Immigration is also a hot subject for Trudeau on both sides of the border. Americans are unhappy that illegals are now crossing from the north, albeit not at the pace they are from the southern border. Additionally, Canada has accepted about three million migrants, which is creating all kinds of havoc in the job and housing markets.
Power Struggle
Canadian citizens are not the only ones upset with Trudeau, as members of the Liberal Party are now looking for turnover at the PM position.
Liberal legislator Chandra Arya, a Trudeau loyalist, stated, "There is no alternative but to have the leadership change now.”
Numerous top officials have resigned rather than continue to serve with Trudeau, including his Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
I doubt it will be Gretzky replacing Trudeau, but the next election, if Trudeau makes it that far, will be in October, and I would all but guarantee that if the Liberal Party manages to hold on, which is far from certain right now, they will choose a new leader of the party.
