Vance says Dems took the bait on crime ‘trap’
There are some who believe that Trump is playing 4D chess while his enemies are stuck playing checkers.
I don’t think that is always the case, but I will say that Trump has been masterful at getting Democrats outraged over issues that hold a place high on the list of concerns with voters.
To that point, it does appear that Trump baited Democrats on crime, literally getting them railing against stopping it, much to their demise.
The Trap
I have always been against federalizing a city, but DC is a very different animal because of how it falls under the purview of Congress.
Trump can do things in DC that he is powerless to do in a regular city in this country.
When Trump moved forward, Democrats went nuclear. The amusing aspect of this was Mayor Bowser, who went from accepting the help, to calling Trump and authoritarian, then applauding the effort.
Trump appears to have set this up, telling reporters, “I think [crime] going to be a big, big subject for the midterms, and I think the Republicans are going to do really well. They called it a trap. This Democrat consultant, he said, ‘He’s put them in a trap again.’”
Bowser Reverses Course
Mayor Bowser is not a dummy, and she has been very savvy since taking office, even getting along with Trump, relatively speaking.
She has avoided his wrath, one of the few Democrat mayors to do so, but that is because, generally speaking, she has been fairly honest, a rarity these days.
To that point, rather than lying about the success of the crackdown, she applauded the effort, stating, "This is what we think in just a couple of weeks of experience has worked. Having more federal law enforcement officers on the street — we think having more stops that got to illegal guns has helped.
“We think that there is more accountability in the system, or at least perceived accountability in the system, that is driving down illegal behavior. We know that we have had fewer gun crimes, fewer homicides, and we have experienced an extreme reduction in carjackings."
Vance Chimes In
While I have never been a big fan of JD Vance (mostly because of his relationship with Vivek Ramaswamy), he is the perfect partner for Trump in this administration.
Where Trump is brash and direct, Vance is calm and can relate to people on a whole different level. To that point, on Trump’s “trap,” he stated, “Is Milwaukee a super safe city right now? It has some crime problems. It’s a beautiful city. There are a lot of incredible, hard-working people who live there. But let’s be honest, Milwaukee has had some crime problems. Chicago … has had a lot of crime problems.
“Why is it that you have mayors and governors who are angrier about Donald Trump offering to help them than they are about the fact that their own residents are being carjacked and murdered in the streets? It doesn’t make an ounce of sense.”
Vance hammered down the fact that Democrats oppose things simply because Donald Trump supports them. He even stated that if Trump made a public statement that puppies were great, someone like AOC would come out against puppies. It made me laugh… Yes, it’s a bit extreme, but the point is well taken. Crime should be an easy agreement, but because Trump wants to stop it, Democrats are advocating for criminals, and it just makes no sense at all.
