Trump touts peace deals, but is he setting himself up again?
During Trump 1.0, the Abraham Accords were signed, which the media downplayed and the Trump administration claimed were some of the greatest peace deals made by any administration.
During the campaign, Trump promised peace between Russia and Ukraine on day one, if not sooner, and now he is touting other peace agreements, but once again, the media is mixed.
One Day
As my regular readers know, I was having a meltdown over some of the promises made by Trump on the campaign trail, one of them being that he could end the Russian-Ukraine war on day one, or even before he took office.
For instance, during a town hall event, Trump had stated, “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.”
This was foolish to me because there were far too many moving parts for Trump to be able to control.
He could have said it would be a top priority, or we will work to have this ended during our first year, but he said one day. And we all know that every word Trump says is taken at face value by the media, so that is what they held him to.
Just Kidding
It took much longer than I expected, but the media finally did call out Trump on his 24-hour promise, and he did not like it one bit.
When Trump was recently asked that promise, he got a bit snippy, stating, "Well, I said that figuratively, and I said that as an exaggeration, because to make a point. Obviously, people know that when I said that, it was said in jest, but it was also said that it will be ended.”
Trump later stated, "The war has been raging for three years. I just got here, and you say, what’s taken so long?"
Here is the problem... regardless of the fact this was Biden’s war, when Trump said he could end it on day one or even before he took office, he then took ownership of it, so he has no one else but himself to blame for this little pickle.
More Peace Deals
While the Russia-Ukraine war has been a bust, the Trump administration did just help broker a deal in Africa for peace, which Trump said was possible because other countries “respect our country again.”
He stated, "We were not a country that was respected. Just a year ago we had a president that was incompetent. We had bad people circulating around this desk, this beautiful Resolute desk. They had, I guess, evil intentions. They were, you couldn't be that stupid, I mean, they had evil intentions, but the world respects our country again."
Trump later added, "In a few short months, we've now achieved peace between India and Pakistan, Israel and Iran and the DRC and Rwanda and, a couple of others also, Serbia [and Kosovo].”
He's right, and this is a major achievement, but Trump will never get the recognition he should have for these deals and the Abraham Accords because of his hubris and constant need to be recognized. It’s not a shot... it is just a hard truth of Trump’s personality. There are times I wish he would just keep his mouth shut and let other nations applaud him before he takes the victory lap, as it would add more legitimacy to his claims. But he has to be first, and it is always to his detriment. Right or wrong, that is just the way it is with Trump and today’s media.
