Trump wants to federalize DC to clean the city up

When a former DOGE employee was attacked, the headlines blew up all over the place, and Trump jumped into the fray. He actually held his tongue regarding Mayor Bowser, a Democrat, but he did say it was time to take cleaning up DC very seriously.

Now, Trump wants to federalize the city, as well as bring in the National Guard for backup, if need be.

Bruised and battered

We reported on the beating of former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee Edward Coristine last week.

From the reports I read, he intervened when a young lady was surrounded by a group of teenagers with bad intentions.

No good deed goes unpunished, as they say, and Coristine was badly beaten, with the pictures showing blood all over his face and body, with it later being reported that he also sustained a concussion.

As I noted in the original report, if a patrol car had not happened by when it did, we might be talking about a young man who was beaten to death rather than getting dinged up.

Gonna fix this

When the reports of the beating went viral, Trump had had enough.

As usual, he took to Truth Social, stating, "I will take care of our cherished Capital, and we will make it, truly, GREAT AGAIN! Before the tents, squalor, filth, and crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the world. It will soon be that again.”

As noted, Trump was not all that harsh to Bowser, stating, "The Mayor of D.C., Muriel Bowser, is a good person who has tried, but she has been given many chances, and the Crime Numbers get worse, and the City only gets dirtier and less attractive. The American Public is not going to put up with it any longer.”

Trump said he would reveal more this week about how he was going to handle the situation.

It’s Liberation Day

When Monday rolled around, Trump called it Liberation Day for DC.

The president stated, “This is liberation day in D.C. and we’re going to take our capital back.” Trump added that he would bring in the National Guard, but only if needed, and he seemed confident that he would not have to use them.

As far as the Metropolitan Police Department is concerned, Trump called for the federalization of the force, which he can do for 30 days without congressional approval. Trump can also force a temporary federalization of the city, but that can only hold for 48 hours before Trump needs to get the chairs and ranking members of the respective committees involved.

Reviews are already coming in on Trump’s statements, and I would say they were fairly predictable and about evenly split.

Some residents of DC are grateful that Trump is taking action, while others think federalizing the city and activating the Guard are going too far. I am going to hold my tongue for now to see how this all plays out. But I will say this… with the crime the way it is in that city, as well as other major Democrat cities, how long can we expect Trump to wait before doing something to stop these cities from being handed over to thugs and criminals? It has to stop.
