Mass arrests in DC since federalized
Last week, Trump made the decision to federalize DC to help slow down crime in the city.
Initially, Mayor Bowser was receptive, and she then started to push the Democrat talking point of Trump being an authoritarian. Now, however, the results are letting everyone know that Trump got this one right.
Federal takeover
I was never for Trump federalizing the city, but that is not because I think DC is a safe city to live in or visit.
I have been there many times, and there are some amazing areas of the city, but there are also some rather deadly pockets where crime is running rampant.
My solution would have been for Trump to offer as much help as Bowser needed to address those pockets of crime, forming a partnership rather than a takeover.
Appearance-wise, I think that would have played far better than Trump just taking over the city.
Expanding his authority
It took about five seconds for Democrats to start spewing rhetoric about this, neglecting to address the crime problem in the city and just going after Trump for taking control.
Now, to be clear, violent crime has been on the downturn in DC, but the problem is that the rates are still unbelievably high compared to even a decade ago. Even Bowser admits they have some very troublesome areas in the city.
Marc Elias, Founder, Democracy Docket, went right after Trump on this, stating, “Yes, so, look, Donald Trump is an authoritarian and he admires authoritarians. So, I mean, he — you have to take my word for it. Look at who he pals around with and look at who he cites with approval.
“And one of the things that authoritarians do, one of the things he has tried to do, is to exert police power, whether it's through taking over local police, whether it's through deploying the National Guard, whether it's in L.A., where he actually deployed the military, whether it is dramatically expanding the use of federal law enforcement in roles that they were never contemplated for.”
Results
People may not like what Trump is doing, but he is getting results, with nearly 70 arrests announced in a single night after the takeover.
Taylor Rogers, a White House spokesperson, explained, “In less than ten days, over 300 dangerous criminals have already been arrested and taken off the streets of Washington, D.C.
“President Trump is delivering on his campaign promise to clean up this city and restore American Greatness to our cherished capital.”
Trump is now also addressing the homeless problem in the city, which is immense. They are being given the option to go to a shelter or be arrested, but they are not being permitted to remain on the streets. Trump is right… This is the nation’s capital, and it should be the safest city in the country. I can assure you from personal experience, it is not. I would have rather seen this as a partnership, but my main concern is getting the city cleaned up, and that appears to finally be taking place.
