Trump gets maps passed in Texas

Over the last few weeks, all the talk has centered on Texas redrawing its congressional maps.

Democrats tried to delay the process by leaving the state, but they have since returned, and the maps have passed.

Now we are getting everyone’s reaction.

Abbott Gets His Win

As far as Democrats are concerned, this is Donald Trump rigging the election.

I have been open about this in that I do not support gerrymandering, but the facts are that states like California, Illinois, and New York are already heavily gerrymandered for Democrats.

Even so, Democrats are acting like they have the high moral ground here.

For instance, Rep. Chris Turner stated, "Members, it breaks my heart to see how this illegal and rigged, mid-decade redistricting scheme is dividing our state and our country. This is Texas, it's not Washington D.C. The impulses of outside politicians and their billionaire backers shouldn't dictate what we do in this chamber, in this House."

Democrats React

These maps gave high-profile Democrats what they needed to grab some headlines.

For instance, New York Governor Hochul stated, “Tonight, Texas Republicans delivered Donald Trump the rigged map he demanded. Trump, Greg Abbott and their allies know they can’t win on their record of stripping health care, tanking the economy, and making families pay more with less.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom added, “You only try changing the rules if you think you’re losing — and that’s exactly what Texas Republicans are attempting to do. We want to give Californians the power this November to counter redistricting power grabs and stand for independently drawn maps in every state."

Again, look at both state maps and tell me how they are fair, especially in California, where 40% of the voters, roughly, are Republicans, yet they only have nine of the 52 House seats.

Trump Celebrates

Trump took a victory lap on social media after the maps passed through the House.

He wrote, “Big WIN for the Great State of Texas!!! Everything Passed, on our way to FIVE more Congressional seats and saving your Rights, your Freedoms, and your Country, itself.”

Trump then set the world on fire, adding, “Florida, Indiana, and others are looking to do the same thing. More seats equals less Crime, a great Economy, and a STRONG SECOND AMENDMENT. It means Happiness and Peace.”

If Trump does this, Democrats will do the same, and I fear we are going to come out on the short end of the stick. Trump is panicking because of the historical results of midterm elections after a party change, and I don’t blame him, but I just don’t think this is the way to go about it because Democrats have more bullets in this particular gun than we do.
