Trump visit to US Open frustrated ‘usual’ VIPs
Around mid-week last week, it was announced that Donald Trump would be attending the finals of the US Open Tennis Championship, a rare occasion because it is a security nightmare for a president to attend an event like this.
I loved it, but mostly because it made the lives of the usual Hollywood big shots miserable due to the added security measures.
Making history
As noted above, this is not something that happens very often, but we all know Trump loves his sporting events.
Trump is actually the first president since Bill Clinton to attend the Open.
The final is obviously the marquee event, and this year’s match featured Carlos Alcaraz, a 22-year-old Spaniard, and No. 1 seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner, 24, of Italy.
Trump went first class, of course, watching the match from the Rolex Suite.
Be careful
Trump being a lightning rod, it was reported that broadcasters were told not to add to the hysteria and avoid talking about any disruptions that were caused by Trump’s presence.
The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) reportedly sent out a memo to broadcasters, which stated, "With respect to Broadcast Coverage, the President will be shown on the World Feed and the Ashe Court Feed during the opening anthem ceremony.
"We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity, including ENG [Electronic News Gathering] coverage."
From what I saw, the reception for Trump was about as expected. Some cheers, some boos, but it was very limited and did not impact the match at all, at least from what I could see.
Nightmare
What his appearance did impact, however, was everyone else, including Hollywood stars who love to attend these events to get the VIP treatment.
One observer stated, “It is an absolute s–tshow. Cars can’t get into parking lots and people are walking miles. Even celebs are having to wait like normies.”
There were no VIP speed lanes due to Trump’s presence, so even the biggest of stars had to wait in line like everyone else to go through security. For some reason, that makes me very happy.
The one thing that did go viral from the event was Trump’s face after Alcaraz won, as Trump did not seem impressed. It was that dismissive smirk that he often gives when something is happening that he couldn't care less about, and it quickly made the rounds on social media as the latest hot meme.
