Sotomayor continues gaslighting comments
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is someone who, as a Supreme Court justice, you would expect to warn against political violence, not encourage it. That, however, at least in my opinion, is not what we are seeing.
Sotomayor has made several concerning statements in the wake of political violence, including being concerned about Trump trying to test the 22nd Amendment and run for a third term.
Military threat
When the Supreme Court issued its ruling on presidential immunity, I was stunned at how far Sotomayor took this.
She knows the president cannot, in any way, shape, or form, order our military to go after political opponents, but she made it sound like Trump could use special forces units as a personal hit squad.
She stated, "Orders the Navy's SEAL Team 6 to assassinate a political rival? Immune. Organizes a military coup to hold onto power? Immune. Takes a bribe in exchange for a pardon? Immune. Immune, immune, immune.
"Even if these nightmare scenarios never play out, and I pray they never do, the damage has been done. In every use of official power, the President is now a king above the law."
Throwing shade
During a more recent interview, she threw shade at the conservative justices on the bench.
To me, it seemed like she was trying to paint them as inherently evil people.
When she was asked about her opinion of them, Sotomayor responded, "I don’t agree with them much. At least not with the majority. And they can be really frustrating."
She added, “And there are moments when I want to scurry out of the room. But I don’t. And what I look for to maintain our collegiality is the good in them.”
Scared
I will tell you right now, there is no way I would ever support Trump running for a third term, simply because it goes against the 22nd Amendment. It won’t happen, period.
Sotomayor, however, seems to think it might, stating that Trump’s statement about a third term could test the 22nd Amendment, which has not been tested to this point.
Again, I don’t give Trump a pass on this, as he never should have entertained the thought of running for a third term, and after considerable pushback to his comments, he backed away (I never believed he was serious).
But that is the problem with today’s liberals. Everyone else on the planet can joke, but the moment Trump says something, it is taken as 100% fact. Joe Biden spoke in hyperbole all the time, and it was never a problem. The fact that a liberal Supreme Court justice is latching on to a moment like this to create fear, well, no wonder we are seeing an uptick in political violence.
