Musk and Trump meeting during Kirk memorial services
Donald Trump and Elon Musk had a very public breakup after the election and Musk’s stint at DOGE. Musk has been sending out signals that he wanted the beef to be over for quite some time, and the Kirk memorial service was the first time Trump and Musk have been in the same room since.
Musk made the move, approaching Trump, and while I doubt these two will be best buds again, it does appear that the relationship is on the path to being mended.
The breakup
For those who have forgotten, this all got started over the BBB, which Musk opposed.
At the time the BBB was going through Congress, Musk had posted, "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
The next thing you know, two men sounded like petulant children in the schoolyard, trading insults.
That did not last long, but the damage was done, and Elon was out of the cool kids’ circle.
Backing JD Vance
During the breakup, Musk had suggested starting a third party, and to be honest, I thought he had a solid plan.
It did not really last very long, though, as Musk seemed to bail on that, with reports surfacing that he was pairing up with JD Vance, or at least attempting to.
Both sides denied the reports, but this really made perfect sense for Musk and Vance.
For Vance to win, he is going to need big money behind him. And with Trump out of the way, Musk could have far more influence with Vance than he ever could have had with Trump.
Joining forces
During the Kirk services, Musk was caught approaching Trump, then sitting down and shaking Trump’s hand.
Trump, when asked about the interaction, claimed that Musk had just come over to say hi, and Trump said he appreciated it.
However, a conservative talking head who was around them claimed that Musk told Trump that if they did not hang together, they would surely hang as individuals, something neither side has confirmed.
This was a smart move by Musk because if he wants in, he at least has to be able to be in the same room as Trump without biting off each other’s head. Now, more than ever, I believe that Musk has shelved the idea of a third party, and I am expecting him to drop some big money on midterm elections, and even more during the 2028 primary, and that is great news for Vance and Republicans.
