DE mayor calls out Philadelphia for sending its homeless to his city
This is one of those stories that is both sad and funny at the same time.
It’s sad that the once great city of Philadelphia has been reduced to garbage.
It’s funny because one Democrat is shipping her problems off to another Democrat and getting called out for it.
Skid Row
I grew up in Philadelphia, although I will rarely admit it these days. I like to tell people that Texas blood was pumping through my veins as a child; it just took me a minute to get there.
But when I lived in Philly, it was an amazing city of blue-collar people who all looked out for each other.
Today, Philly is best known for Eagles fans who trash the city when they win a Super Bowl and the zombie drug, which turned Kensington into skid row, filled with nothing but druggies who are seeing their skin eaten away because of their nasty addiction.
Dr. Dennis Culhane explained, “It is well known here [in Philadelphia] that the Kensington neighborhood has been heavily impacted by the opiate crisis, and that numerous encampments have arisen among this population in that area.”
Ending Homelessness
Oddly enough, a piece was shown in a local magazine titled, “Can Philly Become the First Major U.S. City to End Homelessness?”
Having seen how bad the problem in Philadelphia is firsthand, and still having local contacts there, including Philly PD, I could not help but laugh at the premise of the story. Philly is being taken over by homelessness, so this premise is pure fantasy.
The other flaw in the plan is that they say homelessness is really a housing issue, but that is the last thing it really is.
I have done work with the homeless, more specifically, veteran homeless, and it is often a choice. These are people who want to be off the grid. Then there are the drug addicts, who simply have no desire to get a job and live a regular life. They are hooked. Their only purpose in life is to get just enough money for their next fix.
Ship Them Off
There is apparently another part of the plan that was not in that article, and that would appear to be to give the homeless a free bus ticket to Delaware.
Wilmington, Delaware, Mayor John Carney went off on Philly this week for making its homeless problem his problem. He stated, "It’s just not right for these other places, cities and towns to send their folks to Wilmington. The constant influx from other cities and towns makes it harder for us to care for the population here, and most importantly, it’s unfair to the city residents who live in these neighborhoods."
He had further stated, "Since the start of the Kensington Community Revival Program, we have observed a dramatic increase of individuals experiencing homelessness within our borders.”
Do I think homelessness is funny? Absolutely not. As I stated, I have done work with veterans on this front in the past to better understand why they live on the streets. Having said that, I think it is hysterical that a Democrat mayor is dumping her problems on her fellow Democrats.
