Fani Willis's election interference case against Trump is officially dead
Donald Trump has finally been able to get the Georgia election interference case off his plate.
The case was brought by Fulton County DA Fani Willis, who made herself a household name after filing charges against Trump and nearly two dozen allies. We have been waiting to see what would happen after Willis was removed from the case, and we just got our answer.
Willis reminded me of New York Attorney General Letitia James, who ran for office on taking down Trump.
Nobody outside of Georgia knew who she was, but then she had her name plastered all over the news every night for going after Trump.
As the case unfolded, however, Willis was surrounded by controversy, most notably for her alleged affair with one of the prosecutors on the case.
Eventually, the Georgia Supreme Court removed her from the case, and it has been in limbo ever since.
Picked Up
Judge Scott McAfee had asked Peter J. Skandalakis, executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, to assign a new prosecutor to the case.
When he took charge of the case itself, it surely sounded like he was going to pursue charges against Trump.
He announced, “The decision to assume responsibility for this matter was reached only after careful and deliberate consideration.”
He continued, “While it would have been simple to allow Judge McAfee’s deadline to lapse or to inform the Court that no conflict prosecutor could be secured -- thereby allowing the case to be dismissed for want of prosecution -- I did not believe that to be the right course of action.”
Dismissed
Not long after Skandalakis took over the case, he filed a motion to dismiss the charges rather than allow the case to sit around for years until they would be able to prosecute Trump.
He "This entire case, from the initiation of the District Attorney’s investigation in 2021 to the present, is without precedent. In my professional judgment, the citizens of Georgia are not served by pursuing this case in full for another five to ten years."
He added, "The State having moved for an entry of nolle prosequi for all remaining defendants, the Court grants the motion. This case is hereby dismissed in its entirety."
Trump’s defense attorney applauded the move, stating, "The political persecution of President Trump by disqualified DA Fani Willis is finally over. This case should never have been brought. A fair and impartial prosecutor has put an end to this lawfare.”
With everything else Trump has going on right now, including a possible third impeachment effort if the GOP loses the House in November, I am sure he is glad to have this case off his plate.
