BBC executive resigns over edited Trump video

The BBC had aired a Trump documentary recently, only the staff got a little creative with its editing. They cut Trump’s speech in a way that made it sound as though Trump was encouraging the attendees at the January 6 rally to get violent.

Now, two officials have resigned over the documentary, but Trump is not done with them.

Creative editing

The edits came to light via a report from Michael Prescott, a former independent external adviser to the BBC’s editorial guidelines and standards committee (EGSC).

During the rally, Trump told the crowd “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

The documentary, however, had Trump stating, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you, and we fight. We fight like hell.”

Prescott noted, “It was completely misleading to edit the clip in the way Panorama aired it. The fact that [Trump] did not explicitly exhort supporters to go down and fight at Capitol Hill was one of the reasons there were no federal charges for incitement to riot.”

Resignations

Initially, the BBC appeared to push back on the report, stating, “While we don’t comment on leaked documents, when the BBC receives feedback it takes it seriously and considers it carefully. Michael Prescott is a former adviser to a board committee where differing views and opinions of our coverage are routinely discussed and debated.”

Things appear to have changed, however, as Tim Davie, 58, who has served as BBC director-general since September 2020, just resigned.

Deborah Turness, head of the BBC's news and current affairs arm, also stepped down, stating that the documentary controversy "has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC, an institution that I love. As the CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, the buck stops with me.”

And now Trump is out for blood.

Lawsuit threatened

Trump has beaten up the media pretty good since taking office, and he is going after them again in this case.

Now that the edits have been proven and resignations are in place, his attorneys stated that Trump wants an apology, a retraction, and compensation for damages.

Their letter to the network added, "If the BBC does not comply with the above by November 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. EST, President Trump will be left with no alternative but to enforce his legal and equitable rights, all of which are expressly reserved and are not waived, including by filing legal action for no less than $1,000,000,000 (One Billion Dollars) in damages.”

With two major players resigning over the documentary, the BBC does not have much to stand on, as it was clearly in the wrong. Rather than pay all those legal fees and lose, my guess is that Trump will be getting another large check very soon.
