Candace Owens attacks Karoline Leavitt with out-of-context Iran quote, draws swift backlash

Candace Owens posted an unflattering image of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on X, overlaying text of Leavitt's earlier statement about Iran and the U.S. homeland. The caption read: "Unserious administration." The backlash was immediate, and not from the people Owens probably expected.

Users on X accused the podcaster of ripping Leavitt's words out of context. The quote in question was Leavitt's response to a specific ABC News story about an alleged Iranian drone threat to California, in which the press secretary stated:

"TO BE CLEAR: No such threat from Iran to our homeland exists, and it never did."

Leavitt was addressing a particular intelligence claim about California drones, not issuing a blanket assessment of Iran's capabilities or intentions. Owens framed it as though Leavitt had broadly dismissed any Iranian threat, a reading that collapses the moment you see the full context. YouTuber Joey Salads put it bluntly:

"Show the whole thing - it actually destroys your entire narrative."

The Steak for Breakfast Podcast was less diplomatic, calling Owens a "grifter." The consensus among Owens's critics on the right was clear: the post was dishonest framing dressed up as accountability.

A pattern, not an incident

This isn't a one-off, the Daily Mail reported. Owens has been escalating her attacks on figures in and around the Trump administration for months, and the trajectory tells a story.

During an October episode of her show, Owens appeared to explicitly blame members of President Trump's administration for the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead on September 10 while speaking at a TPUSA event at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson, 22, a left-wing college dropout, has been charged with his murder.

Owens's comments were extraordinary. Speaking about Kirk, she said:

"He gave so much of his life to Trump and to politics, and they were just like NOPE. That's it."

Then she went further:

"So here's a holiday. What is with them giving them a holiday after they kill them? As soon as they give you a holiday, they definitely killed you. There's no question - they killed you."

A spokesman for Owens later attempted to walk it back, claiming she "never stated that Trump killed Kirk" and that she was "questioning the FBI covering up Kirk's death, just as the FBI covered up for MLK's murder, then the government gave MLK a holiday and a boulevard." That clarification raises more questions than it answers, but the original language speaks for itself.

The Kirk connection

What makes this entire saga more pointed is the shared history. Charlie Kirk was instrumental in both Owens's and Leavitt's careers. Leavitt has described Kirk as a mentor, and Kirk supported her 2022 congressional campaign in New Hampshire. Owens, too, rose to national prominence through Kirk's Turning Point USA platform.

Yet when Kirk's memorial was held in Arizona last year, attended by nearly 100,000 people, Owens was not among the speakers. She claimed she was snubbed and alleged the memorial was "being controlled by the White House."

When asked about her exclusion from Trump-adjacent events more broadly, Owens offered no pretense of surprise:

"Why would I be invited by anyone in Trump's Zionist administration, as I am speaking about the topics that I am speaking... It's common sense they're not going to allow me to share the stage."

That framing tells you everything about where Owens has positioned herself. This is not someone who was pushed to the margins and wants back in. This is someone who has chosen the margins and is lobbing from them.

Two directions on the right

The conservative movement is not a monolith, and disagreements within it are not inherently destructive. Healthy movements argue. But there is a difference between principled internal debate and what Owens is doing, which is selectively distorting the words of people on her own side to build a personal brand around grievance and conspiracy.

Leavitt's Iran statement was narrow, specific, and verifiable. Owens made it look like something it wasn't. That's not commentary. That's manipulation. And the right should be able to say so without treating every internal critique as fratricide.

Meanwhile, the real world moves on. Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, has taken over leadership of TPUSA. She and Leavitt are scheduled to appear together at George Washington University on April 2 for TPUSA's "This Is The Turning Point Tour." Owens will be in Washington on March 19 to interview former Trump administration national security official Joe Kent, and is set to appear at the Catholics For Catholics 3rd annual gala on Thursday.

Both camps are building. Only one of them is doing it by tearing down allies with cropped screenshots.

What the right should take from this

Conservatives have spent years, rightly, calling out legacy media for deceptive editing, selective quoting, and context-free gotcha clips. The standard doesn't change because the person doing it has a podcast instead of a CNN chyron. If anything, it matters more when the distortion comes from inside the house, because it hands ammunition to people who want the right fractured and distracted.

Owens has every right to criticize the administration. She has every right to question policy on Iran or anything else. What she doesn't get to do is misrepresent someone's words, get caught, and then act as though the people correcting her are the problem.

The right doesn't need more friendly fire. It needs people who shoot straight.
