Chiefs star Travis Kelce reportedly mulling retirement
The NFL is a tough game, and those bumps and bruises take a bit longer to heal as you get older. When there are other factors, such as your QB being injured and a possible move to a new city, retirement becomes a bit easier.
That is the dilemma facing Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce.
Mahomes Injured
With everything else Kelce has going on, you have to wonder how much longer he is going to play.
First, he is getting married to Taylor Swift, and if they have kids, Taylor is not going to be the one to give up her career to take care of the kids.
Second, what does the future hold with star QB Patrick Mahomes going down with a torn ACL during the week 15 game against the Chargers?
As bad as that is, it is not the worst of it for Kelce.
Changing Venues
It was announced this week that the Chiefs are leaving Missouri to head over the border to Kansas.
The name won’t change, but the fanbase will, and that is going to hit hard for Kelce, who is deeply rooted in the Kansas City, MO, community.
The Chiefs have been unable to come to a deal with Missouri officials for a new stadium, and Kansas was more than happy to fill that void, which has to be heartbreaking for fans.
I know it is only about 30 miles, but this is about tradition. This will now be the third franchise to leave the state in three decades. They will remain at Arrowhead for a few more years, but we have all seen what happens to fans once the announcement is made.
Time to Go
On Christmas Day, the Chiefs will be hosting the Denver Broncos, in what will be their final home game of the season, and possibly the last time fans see Kelce suit up for the Chiefs.
He is now 36, in the final year of his contract, and while he has had another great year, the Mahomes injury will surely factor into whatever he decides to do.
Looking at this from the outside, why put your body through another grueling year when this team clearly needs to start to rebuild from its aging core? Kelce has a billionaire fiancé, a successful podcast, and a slew of endorsement deals that are likely to remain in place even if he does retire. Not to mention, he has banked tens of millions during his playing career.
In fact, if you look at his brother, Jason, who recently retired from the Eagles, he will only get more endorsements because he will have far more time on his hands. My money is that he calls it quits, so if you are a Chiefs fan, get to Arrowhead this weekend if you want to see him in person. I truly believe this will be the last round for Kelce.
