Comey blames questions for his alleged lies to Congress

In September 2025, former FBI Director James Comey was indicted for lying to Congress and obstruction.

I think he got off easy, to be honest, but Comey immediately went to work to try to have the case dismissed.

This week, his attorney tried to blame the confusion over his alleged lies on the ambiguous nature of the questions.

The Indictment

While the Democrats say that this is a politically motivated prosecution, they are not taking into account that the grand jury indicted Comey.

The indictment was announced in late September, with Attorney General Pam Bondi stating, “No one is above the law. Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”

FBI Director Kash Patel added, “Today, your FBI took another step in its promise of full accountability. For far too long, previous corrupt leadership and their enablers weaponized federal law enforcement, damaging once proud institutions and severely eroding public trust."

Not Guilty

When Comey entered his plea, he, of course, pleaded not guilty, then went online to whine about how unfair the charges were.

His attorney, Pat Fitzgerald, stated, "It's the honor of my life to represent Jim Comey in this matter.”

Critics of the case have latched onto former prosecutor Erik Siebert not wanting to charge Comey, believing the case was not strong enough, yet his replacement, Lindsey Halligan, has no problem at all getting the indictment from the grand jury.

Granted, the indictment is not a guilty verdict, but you still have to show cause to get that indictment. There is clearly a thread here that needed to be pulled.

It’s Not My Fault

You just have to love how none of these people are never to blame for what they did. Mind you, Comey also presided over several illegal FISA warrants, which he also failed to take the blame for.

Comey’s motion to have the case dismissed claims, “Here, the indictment conspicuously omits the lengthy, confusing questions that prompted Mr. Comey’s testimony.” The filing continued, “Senator Cruz’s questions are fundamentally ambiguous because people of ordinary intellect would not be expected to understand that he meant to ask a broad question about Mr. Comey’s interactions with anyone at the FBI—including Daniel Richman—during a colloquy focused on Mr. McCabe.

“On the contrary, a reasonable person readily would have understood Senator Cruz to be asking only whether Mr. Comey had specifically authorized Mr. McCabe to be an anonymous source in news reports.”

The filing concludes, “On that reasonable understanding, the indictment contains no allegations that Mr. Comey’s answers were false: it never alleges that Mr. Comey made a false statement regarding Mr. McCabe. On the contrary, the indictment omits Senator Cruz’s statements about Mr. McCabe, obscuring the context necessary to understand both the questions themselves and Mr. Comey’s responses.”

My fear is that a liberal judge will dismiss the case and give Comey a walk, which would be a crushing blow to AG Pam Bondi and the DOJ, not to mention Trump. I am pretty convinced that if she does not get convictions in these cases, Trump will cut her loose. This case likely falls in the middle of the three big ones (the other two being the Letitia James case and the John Bolton case, the latter of which has the biggest teeth of them all).
