DHS shifts immigration enforcement to target serious offenders: report

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is rewriting the playbook on immigration enforcement with a pivot that might just quiet some of the loudest critics.

After facing a storm of public backlash, DHS is stepping away from sweeping raids on unauthorized migrants and zeroing in on those convicted of serious crimes.

This change isn’t just a cosmetic tweak; it’s a response to declining support for broad deportation policies tied to President Donald Trump’s agenda.

From broad raids to focused enforcement

Previously, federal agents cast a wide net, targeting individuals based on ethnicity, language, or even where they shopped, like Home Depot parking lots.

Now, under the leadership of U.S. Border Patrol Commander at Large Gregory Bovino, the focus will narrow to those with serious criminal convictions, according to NewsNation.

Large-scale operations at everyday locations are being deprioritized, though traffic stops will still be fair game for enforcement.

Public sentiment drives policy shift

The shift comes as polls paint a grim picture for mass deportation efforts, with a Public Religion Research Institute survey showing Trump’s approval on immigration dropping from 42% to 33% since March.

Even more telling, a YouGov poll last month revealed that most Americans aren’t on board with ICE operations linked to Trump’s hardline stance.

And let’s not ignore the human angle— a KFF/The New York Times survey found that about half of immigrants polled said they and their family members “feel less safe” with Trump as president.

Immigrant communities feel the heat

That sentiment of fear isn’t just numbers on a page; it reflects a real chill in communities where raids have hit hard this year in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Charlotte.

These operations sparked protests and lawsuits, with many questioning whether the heavy-handed tactics went too far in disrupting lives.

While DHS is dialing back the broad-brush approach, not everything is changing— take the ongoing “Catahoula Crunch” operation in New Orleans, for instance.

Ongoing operations amid new priorities

That mission, still in full swing, has already netted over 250 arrests, with DHS aiming for a staggering 5,000, per NewsNation reports.

Border Patrol’s street pickups may be on the decline, but targeted efforts like this show the agency isn’t packing up its bags entirely.

So, while the woke crowd might cheer the end of wider raids, let’s be clear: enforcement isn’t disappearing— it’s just getting a sharper edge, and serious offenders should still watch their backs.
