Domestic violence is just a horrible crime, and sadly, ever since COVID, we have seen a disturbing trend on this front. People are snapping for all sorts of reasons, but this one is really just absurd.

Reports broke on Christmas Day about a man who snapped during the Monday Night Football (MNF) game, killing his family and taking his own life.

COVID Breakout

When the lockdown was put in place for COVID, the rise in domestic violence was disturbing.

The studies on this were extensive, but it all basically came down to the fact that people were not used to being stuck in the house with family members 24/7.

There was spousal abuse and child abuse taking place, and it was not just domestic violence that was on the rise.

There was a rise in addiction and various other social issues as well. Needless to say, the lockdown was a complete and utter failure on this front.

Holidays Promote Violence

Abuse is a learned behavior, and when you add in the usual rise in domestic violence to the rise created by COVID, you have two trains headed in opposite directions that are destined for an epic collision.

The holiday season increases tension for numerous reasons, with finances being a big part of that. There is also the added time together, which can create a very tense situation in some homes.

Cris Swaters, public affairs officer for Springfield Police, explained, “It’s just a really emotional time of year for a lot of people. There’s a lot of emotions and mental health involved in the holiday season, and it can be tough on a lot of people.”

Swaters later added, “As people are together more, we’re inside more, there’s just more opportunity for tensions to escalate and for violence to follow.”

He Just Snapped

This week, it was reported that Jason Kenney, 47, snapped during the December 22 MNF game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Kenney and his wife, Crystal, got into a fight when she suggested he turn off the game. Kenney had been drinking, and an argument ensued, which led to Crystal telling their 12-year-old son to call 911.

As the boy ran to a neighbor’s home to call the police, gunshots were heard, as Kenney had allegedly shot and killed his wife, as well as shot their 13-year-old daughter. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd explained, "She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway.’"

He later added, "The entire family was destroyed. Our homicide detectives are distraught. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be."

Devastating, to say the least. I cannot imagine the trauma his son will have to live with for the rest of his life.
