Former GOP Senator predicts Republicans will continue to split with Trump
Slowly but surely, we are starting to see some dissent in the Republican Party against Donald Trump.
This all started with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) having her falling out with Trump, but it has significantly escalated.
With all the off-record comments pushing back against things Trump has done and said, one former GOP senator believes he knows when we are going to see more open pushback from Republicans.
The Fallout
If there was one person in Congress whom I never thought would break with Trump, it was Rep. Greene.
Everything changed when Trump snubbed her for a cabinet position, then appeared to block her from running for a Senate seat.
From that point on, Greene declared war on Trump, pushing back against legislation and joining with other Trump haters to get the Epstein files released.
She explained how Trump reacted, stating, “And he was furious with me. He said that it was going to hurt people.” I expect Trump to deny it, and while I don’t always believe Greene, we all know how upset Trump was over this, so don’t doubt her in this case.
The Drug Boat Strikes
When Trump decided to use the military to go after drug runners without going through Congress, more Republicans started to push back, the most high-profile of these being Senator Rand Paul (R-KY).
Paul once again pushed back with all the drama over the second strike that took place on September 2, 2025. He stated, “On Sunday, Secretary Hegseth said he had no knowledge of this, and it did not happen.
“And then the next day, from the podium at the White House, are saying it did happen. So, either he was lying to us on Sunday, or he’s incompetent and didn’t know it had happened.”
Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) has also called for “vigorous oversight to determine the facts related to these circumstances.”
The Filing Deadline
Republicans know that if they go up against Trump now, Trump will try to find someone to primary them and remove them from Congress. He has consistently made that threat against GOP threats, such as Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).
Politico’s Jonathan Martin was recently on a panel discussion, where he claimed a former GOP senator gave him some insight on when we will start to see more pushback against Trump. He stated, “Quite frankly, I talked to a former GOP senator yesterday, somebody who I know, Joe [Scarborough] knows, who said ‘two words’ to me: filing deadlines.
“Why do filing deadlines matter? Because what the senator was talking about was the filing deadlines for primaries next year, which is to say, when that clears, when that passes, when these lawmakers know who is or is not running against them in primaries next year, then you'll see even more freedom, even more independence.”
When push comes to shove, everyone in Congress is going to protect their seat, and if they see Trump losing support, they will sell him out in a second.
If the GOP cannot hold the House in 2026, the chances of winning the White House in 2028 decrease, so these congressmen are not going to have the fear of being ousted by Vance and Trump during that cycle.
As you guys know, I am already worried about the 2026 midterms, but if we start having mass pushback against Trump from within the party, I think you are going to see a monumental loss. To that point, Trump needs to start reaching out to members of Congress right now to unify the GOP front. If not, we are going to hand the entire government back to the Democrats in 2028.
