James Carville tells Ilhan Omar to leave the Democratic Party, and the clip is everywhere after her State of the Union outburst

A video of longtime Democratic consultant James Carville telling Rep. Ilhan Omar to get out of the Democratic Party has gone viral, resurfacing after Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib heckled President Donald Trump at multiple points during his State of the Union address on Tuesday.

Carville, the mastermind of President Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign, did not mince words during a May 7, 2025, session of "Politics War Room with James Carville and Al Hunt."

"Lady, why don't you just get out of the Democratic Party."

He followed that with a suggestion that carried the weight of a man who has spent decades winning elections for Democrats: "Honestly, start your own movement."

The clip found new life this week for obvious reasons. Omar's conduct at the State of the Union gave it fresh context, and the internet did the rest.

The comment that started it

Carville's frustration traces back to a February 2018 Al Jazeera interview in which Omar, then a congressional candidate, declared:

"Our country should be more fearful of white men because they're causing most of the deaths within this country."

According to the Washington Examiner, Carville zeroed in on what that kind of rhetoric means for a party that needs to win elections. His math was simple: white men make up about a third of everybody who votes in every election. Running against them is not a strategy. It is a suicide note.

"Now we're going to have a campaign by the progressive left against white men who vote about a third of everybody that votes in every election."

He then made a broader point that is worth hearing in full:

"Fact, we don't think we ought to be running against any gender, any ethnic group, any race, any religion, or anything else."

That is a remarkable sentence coming from a Democrat. Not because the sentiment is controversial, but because it is so plainly at odds with how the progressive wing of his party actually operates. The Democratic Party's loudest voices have spent years sorting Americans into identity categories, assigning moral weight based on skin color and gender, and then wondering why the coalition keeps shrinking.

Carville sees the problem. He just can't fix it.

A party that can't quit its worst instincts

What makes Carville's outburst compelling is not just the target but the despair behind it. This is a man who built a modern Democratic campaign strategy, now reduced to begging his own party's members to stop alienating voters. He offered Omar a perfectly reasonable off-ramp:

"Why don't you, lady, start your own party? And then when it's over, if you want to caucus with Democrats, fine."

He even extended an olive branch while drawing the line, saying the party agrees with progressives on many things but does not "believe we ought to be running against white men."

Then came the prognosis. Carville described progressives like Omar in a single word: "helpless." He elaborated with the kind of bluntness that consultants usually save for closed-door sessions:

"[Progressives] cannot be helped and [there is] nothing you can do to help them, they don't want to be helped."

And the kicker:

"If they had any guts, they would start their own goddamn political party and get out of ours."

This is not a man offering constructive criticism. This is a man writing an obituary and hoping the patient can still read.

Tuesday night proved his point

Whatever hope Carville might have harbored that Omar would take the hint evaporated Tuesday night. Omar and Tlaib heckled the President at multiple points during the State of the Union, turning what Carville's own party once treated as a solemn occasion into a spectacle.

President Trump responded on Wednesday via Truth Social:

"When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event, they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized."

The clip of Carville telling Omar to leave the party then rocketed across social media. The timing was not subtle. Americans watched two Democratic congresswomen make a scene at one of the most-watched political events of the year, and then a legendary Democratic operative's plea for them to leave went viral the next day.

The deeper problem Democrats won't face

Carville's frustration reveals something the Democratic Party has refused to confront for years. The progressive wing is not a faction that can be managed. It is a faction that believes management is oppressive. It does not want to win elections on terms that require persuading voters who do not already agree with it. It wants to shame those voters into compliance, and when that fails, it wants to declare them enemies.

Omar's 2018 comment was not an accident or a gaffe. It was a worldview. The idea that America "should be more fearful of white men" is not a policy position. It is a declaration of who belongs in the coalition and who does not. When a party's rising stars campaign on that premise, voters notice. They noticed in 2024. They will notice again.

Carville understands this. He has been saying it in various forms for years. But the people he is trying to reach do not care what James Carville thinks, because James Carville represents the kind of Democrat who actually wins general elections, and winning general elections requires compromise with an electorate that the progressive left holds in contempt.

The Democrats' problem is not that they have a few loud members. Every party does. The problem is that the loud members set the tone, drive the media coverage, and define the brand, while the adults in the room are left pleading into a podcast microphone for someone, anyone, to listen.
