Sean Ono Lennon, the 50-year-old son of Beatles legend John Lennon and Yoko Ono, announced the birth of his first child, a boy named Aurelius, with longtime partner Charlotte Kemp Muhl.

Lennon shared the news Tuesday evening on Instagram, posting a photo of himself holding the newborn wrapped in a white blanket. A second image showed Kemp Muhl, 39, with the baby in a hospital bed. The caption on that one read simply: "Baby Momma!"

The arrival makes Aurelius the first grandchild of John Lennon, the legendary Beatles co-founder who was killed on Dec. 8, 1980, at the age of 40. Sean, born in Manhattan on Oct. 9, 1975, his father's 35th birthday, has spent much of his adult life as a custodian of that enormous musical legacy. Now he has a legacy of his own to raise.

A "Human Bean" arrives

Page Six reported on the birth announcement, capturing the couple's social media posts in full. Sean's Instagram message struck a playful tone:

"Okay so...Charlotte and I would like to announce that we have indeed created a Human Bean! His name is, Aurelius! Thank you!"

Kemp Muhl, a musician and model, matched his energy with her own post. She shared images of herself carrying Aurelius in a baby harness while walking in water, holding a small crab, and watching over the sleeping newborn.

Her caption leaned into the new-parent fog:

"We made a human! Am convinced DNA is agentic alien quaternary code. The sleep deprivation only adds to the surrealism...Burping technique tips welcome. Been playing him Aphex Twin and Stravinsky. Meconium is crazy."

Julian Lennon, Sean's half-brother and John Lennon's eldest son with his first wife Cynthia, reacted to the announcement on Instagram with four heart emojis. Sean replied: "Uncle Jules!"

Twenty years together before parenthood

Sean and Kemp Muhl first met at the Coachella music festival in 2005 and began dating two years later. Their relationship has been built as much around music as anything else. Together they formed the psychedelic rock band The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Sean has carved out a prolific career in his own right, four solo albums, five albums with his mother Yoko Ono, and three with The Claypool Lennon Delirium, another psychedelic rock project. He also produced Lana Del Rey's 2017 album "Lust for Life" and recorded a duet with her on the track "Tomorrow Never Came."

But his father's shadow is long, and Sean has embraced rather than run from it. In a December 2025 appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, he spoke about stepping into the role his 93-year-old mother had held for decades.

"I'm just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn't forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko. That's how I look at it."

He added that "obviously the world is also the custodian of his legacy," acknowledging the shared ownership fans feel over the Beatles catalog and story.

John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" gets a grandson

The elder Lennon never lived to see this day. He was killed in 1980, the same year he and Yoko Ono released "Double Fantasy." That album included "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)," a lullaby John wrote for Sean, then a small child. The song's gentle promise, a father singing to a son about the life ahead, carries a weight now that it couldn't have carried then.

Yoko Ono, now 93, already has two grandchildren through her daughter Kyoko Chan Cox, Emi and Jack. Aurelius is her third grandchild but the first to carry the Lennon line forward through Sean.

Whether Aurelius will grow up surrounded by music seems like a settled question, given his parents' careers and his grandmother's artistic history. What kind of world he inherits is another matter entirely.

Some legacies are chosen. Some are born into. Baby Aurelius just got both.
