Trump administration reveals plan to cut egg prices

As most of you know, we are seeing record-high egg prices right now.

The media and Democrats are blaming Trump for this, but the root cause occurred under the Biden administration. Trump is now introducing his plan to lower costs, albeit a short-term solution.

100 Million Chickens

During the Biden administration, roughly 100 million chickens had to be slaughtered due to an outbreak of the bird flu.

Some say Biden overreacted, but the reality of this is that the Department of Agriculture required the killing of the chickens to prevent further outbreaks of the disease.

This resulted in a severe shortage of chickens, which in turn created an egg shortage. This is something that is not going to go away anytime soon, as it will take considerable time to rebuild chicken population to what it was.

To that point, Emily Metz, president and CEO of the American Egg Board, stated, “Not to be the bearer of bad news, but we’re in this for a while. Until we have time without a detection, unfortunately this very, very tight egg supply is going to continue.”

Soaring Prices

Democrats, who refused to discuss grocery prices for four years, are now pouncing on the $5/dozen price of eggs. This has resulted in higher grocery bills and restaurants charging a surcharge for any dish that includes eggs.

The bird flu, however, is not the sole cause of the rising prices of eggs. The industry, as is typical, are being pigs, for use of a better word. Profits are soaring in the industry right now, up by more than 50% over last year.

Federal Trade Commissioner Alvara Bedoya is now calling on Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson to open an investigation, stating, “There’s a person in the government who could flick his pen and start an investigation into what the hell is going on with eggs. I know there’s enough smoke that it’s worth figuring out if there’s a fire.”

This is price gauging, and while we all expected the price of eggs to go up, nobody expected them to do double in price. In fact, is some supermarkets, the prices are tickling near $10 per dozen, just showing you how they are taking advantage of the shortage.

Trump’s Plan

The Trump administration unveiled its plan to push back on the high prices of eggs this week.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins stated, "We're looking at importing some eggs in the short term. We're talking to several countries around the world that can get us eggs right away. This would not be a long-term fix, but to immediately begin to bring those prices down."

I would not go so far as to blame the slaughtering of the chickens on Biden, as that was just standard procedure when there is an outbreak. But this goes back to 2022, and the Biden administration put no plan in place to address the issue, so Trump is really trying to dig himself out of a massive hole dug by Biden.

Hopefully, this short-term plan by the Trump administration will bring some relief while the chicken population is reloaded. But again, don’t expect a lot of relief in the short-period, as it will take time for this plan to be put in place an executed, but it could literally be years before we see egg prices in or around the price they were when Trump left office in 2021.
