Trump hopes to end income tax for low- and middle-income earners

Donald Trump has been looking for ways to eliminate income tax for as long as I can remember.

Now, he thinks he has figured out a way to eliminate it through the middle class, as well as lowering it for everyone else.

I love the idea, I am just not sure if this is the way to go about it, but I sure hope I am wrong.

The postcard

Do you remember Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) talking about doing our taxes on the back of a postcard during the 2016 election cycle?

Well, that was not an original Ted Cruz idea, as I had first read about it in an old Trump book, but I am not even sure that was the first time it was mentioned.

Regardless, at the time, Cruz stated, “However, the most immediate, effective way to implement comprehensive tax reform is to pass a simple flat tax -- so simple that Americans can file on a postcard.”

He continued, “This should be the starting point for reform, and once it’s in place we should pursue a Fair Tax.”

Killing the attacks

Democrats have been attacking Trump on his tax cuts since his first term, but they are doing some fancy number manipulations.

When we talk about tax breaks, we have to talk about them in terms of percentages, not raw dollars, but that is what Democrats are doing to make this seem like a fix for Trump’s friends.

For example, if you make $100,000 a year and save an extra 1% on taxes, you get $1,000 that year. But if you make $1 million and receive the same break, you saved $10,000, which is why Dems were using dollars instead of percentages.

When they say people who made more than $1 million a year saved $114 billion in tax cuts, those numbers include people like Elon Musk. So, you see how this has all been manipulated, right?

No more taxes

Trump believes he can eliminate lower-tiered income tax while lowering taxes for everyone else with his tariffs.

Trump stated, "Whether you get rid of it or just keep it around for fun or have it really low, much lower than it is now, but you won't be paying income tax.”

He had previously discussed this about tariffs, stating, "It's time for the United States to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful than ever before. Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich foreign nations, we should be tariffing and taxing foreign nations to enrich our citizens."

For people at the top of the $150,000 cap Trump is proposing, that means they save between 16% and 19%, which equates to nearly $30,000 in some cases, and that would make a huge difference. Even if you are paying a little extra at the cash register for tariffs, you will not come close to using up all that extra cash. And just as important, it crushed one of the biggest attacks Democrats use against Trump.
