Trump pushes Thune to scrap Senate's blue slip rule

President Trump is taking aim at a dusty Senate tradition, demanding the blue slip policy be axed to stop the blocking of his nominees.

Trump has openly pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to end the blue slip custom, a rule that lets home-state senators halt judicial and U.S. attorney nominations.

This little-known practice hands immense power to senators—often Democrats in key states—to derail confirmations based on partisan whims.

Trump's frustration erupts on social media

On Truth Social, Trump vented about the policy, arguing it makes approving “well qualified Republican” nominees nearly impossible in states with Democratic senators.

“So unfair to Republicans, and not Constitutional,” Trump blasted on Truth Social, urging Thune, a “fantastic guy,” to kill the blue slip process. That’s a sharp demand, and it’s tough to ignore how partisan gridlock keeps stalling good candidates.

Trump also pointed fingers at Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) for letting this outdated rule linger on.

Habba’s exit fuels the fire

The latest trigger for Trump’s outrage came on Monday when his former lawyer, Alina Habba, stepped down as New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor.

A federal appeals court ruled Habba overstayed her interim term, and with fierce pushback from New Jersey’s Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim, her confirmation was doomed. It’s a textbook example of blue slip obstruction, and conservatives are right to question this double standard.

That same day, Trump aired his grievances, decrying how Republican nominees are consistently blocked in Democratic-leaning states.

Blue slips: a barrier to progress?

“The Republicans should be ashamed of themselves that they allow this to go on,” Trump stated on Monday, frustrated by the inability to appoint U.S. attorneys without Democratic consent. That’s a biting remark, and it spotlights a real issue—why should one party wield veto power over justice roles?

Trump has pushed to scrap blue slips before, only to be rebuffed by Grassley, who claims nominees without returned slips can’t muster the votes for confirmation. But shouldn’t merit trump political maneuvering in these decisions?

Trump’s also called to ditch the filibuster, though Thune and other GOP senators hesitate, fearing it could backfire when Republicans aren’t in control. It’s a valid concern, yet it sidesteps the urgent bottleneck at hand.

Will Senate tradition bend or break?

For many conservatives, the blue slip mess reeks of old-school rules that shield a progressive agenda over fair governance. Is it time for Thune to take a stand?

Scrapping blue slips might pave the way for long-delayed Republican nominees to finally take their posts. But it could spark retaliation from Democrats when the tables turn.

Still, with capable picks like Habba getting shoved aside, many on the right are wondering: How long can Republicans play by rules that seem rigged against them?
