Zelensky appears ready to make concessions for peace deal

It was not so long ago that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was adamant that giving up land to Russia was not on the table. He now appears to have made a major concession in exchange for protection guarantees from President Trump.

The two men met this week, and we actually have a peace deal in sight, with Russia still being the wildcard.

Revised Deal

Several weeks ago, reports surfaced that the United States had presented Ukraine with a peace deal, and it was being reviewed by Ukrainian officials.

Zelensky, however, also noted that surrendering land to Russia was not on the table.

He insisted that under his laws, he has “no right” to do so.

Trump just seemed dejected about peace at the time, stating, "They talk, but they don't produce, and the war just keeps going on and on."

Changing Tactics

Russia has continued to attack Ukraine, with the latest volley reportedly involving about 500 drones and dozens of missiles being fired at Kyiv.

Zelensky made a desperate plea on X, stating, "If the whole world – Europe and America – is on our side, together we will stop Putin," but, "if anyone – whether the U.S. or Europe – is on Russia’s side, this means the war will continue."

He continued, "There are no other options here. And this is a risk for all countries in the world. Because Russia will not stop, regardless of any agreements, any eloquent messages from them. They will not stop at Ukraine.”

Then, on Saturday night, Zelensky dropped the bombshell, writing, "Ukraine supported President Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire. Ukraine has agreed to many different compromises, and this is documented in our draft agreements, in our 20-point plan. Ukraine is willing to do whatever it takes to stop this war. For us, priority number one – or the only priority – is ending the war.”

Good News

On Sunday, Trump met with Zelensky, then reportedly had a call with Putin. Trump stated, "We had a terrific meeting. We discussed a lot of things. As you know, I had an excellent phone call with President Putin I do think we're getting a lot closer, maybe very close."

He then added, "We're going to see. Otherwise, it's going to go on for a long time. It will either end or it's going to go on for a long time and millions of additional people are going to be killed. Nobody wants that."

I truly believe that Zelensky wants this over as soon as possible, but Putin clearly cannot be trusted. We have been down this road before, then someone says something that hurts Putin’s feelings, and he ramps up the attack again.

Like most of you, I am sick of seeing our tax dollars flushed during this war, especially since I know the United States will be expected to take on the brunt of the rebuilding of Ukraine. Here’s hoping this is not false hope and that everyone involved is finally ready to sign a deal and end this ridiculous war.
